Why Test for a UTI?
- Prompt testing for a UTI is crucial because untreated infections can lead to more serious health complications, such as kidney infections.
- Early detection allows for timely treatment, which can alleviate discomfort and prevent the infection from spreading.
- By testing for a UTI at the first sign of symptoms, you can ensure a quicker recovery and avoid unnecessary complications.
- Knowing whether you have a UTI can help you avoid taking unnecessary antibiotics, which can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
UTI Symptoms
Recognizing the symptoms of a UTI is the first step towards effective treatment.
Common symptoms include:
- A strong, persistent urge to urinate
- A burning sensation during urination
- Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
- Blood in the urine, which may appear red, bright pink, or cola-colored
- Pelvic pain, especially in women, around the pubic bone and the center of the pelvis
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to test for a UTI as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment can help you feel better faster and prevent the infection from causing more severe health issues.
Risk Factors for a UTI
Certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI). Understanding these risk factors can help in taking preventive measures and recognizing symptoms early.
Here are some common risk factors for UTIs:
- Female Anatomy: Women are at a higher risk due to their shorter urethra, which allows bacteria easier access to the bladder.
- Sexual Activity: Sexual intercourse can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract. Having multiple sexual partners can also increase the risk.
- Certain Types of Birth Control: Using diaphragms or spermicidal agents for birth control can contribute to the growth of bacteria.
- Menopause: Postmenopausal women have lower estrogen levels, which can alter the normal bacteria in the urinary tract and increase the risk of infections.
- Urinary Tract Abnormalities: Structural abnormalities or blockages in the urinary tract can impede urine flow, increasing the risk of infection.
- Immune System Suppression: Conditions like diabetes or medications that suppress the immune system can make the body more susceptible to infections.
Kit Contents
Materials Provided:
- Test strip(s)
- Instruction for use
Materials Required But Not Provided:
- Timer, clock or a watch
- Absorbent material (e.g. paper towel)

Test Usage
IMPORTANT: Remove the test strip from the foil pouch. Retain the foil pouch to use the color chart on the outside to interpret the results. Do not use the test strip if the pouch is torn or damaged.
-
STEP 1 Hold the end of the test strip and begin urinating. After l or 2 seconds of passing urine, hold the strip downward with the test pads pointing into the urine stream for l-2 seconds. Make sure the test pads are completely wet.
-
STEP 1 Immediately bring the edge of the test strip into contact with an absorbent material (e.g. paper towel) to remove excess urine. Lay the test strip with the test pads facing upwards and begin timing.
-
STEP 1 Interpret results at 120 seconds (2 minutes). Compare the test pads to the color blocks on the foil pouch. Hold the test strip close to the color blocks and carefully match each test pad to the color chart for that test.
NOTE: Do not read results after 180 seconds (3 minutes).
Limitations
There is the possibility that this test may produce false results. The test may be affected by medication or dietary supplement that may change urine color. Do not use test strips if you observe abnormal urine colors (such as bright yellow or green). Do not use test strips while taking antibiotics. Consult your physician before making any medical decision.
